Aims
of the Chelmsford Engineering Society Schools Competition
The Society was formally established in 1920 for the
advancement of public education in the science and practice of Engineering in
and around Chelmsford. The Society now recognises that Engineering has
broadened in scope to include disciplines such as computing, information
technology, CAD and other emerging technologies. It also appreciates the
importance of energy conservation, carbon footprint and “Green” issues. 1. To
encourage and promote these broad aspects the Society arranges an annual
Engineering Technology Competition for Schools in the local Eastern
Region. Established and traditional
engineering skills and practices remain important and so projects demonstrating
such are welcomed too. 2. To
take part in the Competition, students are required to submit their project,
setting it up on display at the Anglia Ruskin University, presenting it to and
discussing it with the judges. It will be marked against the criteria shown on
the Assessment Form enclosed. 3. The
competition process is a valuable learning experience for the student, both in
terms of constructive feedback from professional engineers on their work and
approach, as well as the interaction with peers and adults in a competitive environment.
Competition entry, plus any award, offers a positive addition to a CV
especially when the student is intending to apply for Higher Education or enter
Industry. 4. The
Schools Competition has three entry age group categories; 5. A
project can be entered in either a Design or a Systems category. It can be part
of the GCSE School curriculum or an own initiated project. The Design category indicates that the
project work has focused on the design process, the workmanship, finish,
aesthetics and functionality of the manufactured prototype, and its ease of
manufacture. The Systems category focuses on the
examination of alternative engineering/technology techniques and solutions. The
performance and the benefits of the selected solution has been determined and
predicted. The technological justification for the chosen sub assemblies or
component hardware or software should be understood and described in some
detail. 6. The
Society awards prizes in each age category to project entries from Essex
Schools. These are given as book tokens to the value of £120 for the first
prize with £60 and £40 awarded for second and third. Additional discretionary
awards can also be made. The prizes are presented at the Award
Ceremony also to be held at the Anglia Ruskin University where the projects
will be on display to the public. Trophies are also presented to winning
Schools for display during the following year. 7. The
Competition takes place early in July when exams are finished and is run in
collaboration with the local STEMPOINT team (www.stemteamessex.org.uk) which
also runs the regional Young Engineers competition. The Society Award Ceremony
takes place after the end of the summer term on a Saturday at the end of July
so all interested parties have the opportunity to attend. 8. Sponsorship for the Chelmsford Engineering Society Annual Competition is received from those Essex business and enterprises keen to promote and foster local engineering expertise. The Society publicises the sponsors at the Competition and the Award Ceremony. If would like to be involed as a school, a sponsor or a judge then please contact the Chairman of the CES Schools Competition Committee, Mr Roy Hilsley, at the email address below. valandroyhilsley@btinternet.com 2009 |
